Your History and Geography

Dear Year 1 Parents,

During Year 1 part of the Geography Curriculum calls for the children to realise their place in the world, have some place knowledge and become familiar with the human and physical nature of Geography. They also need to carry out fieldwork.

From which part of the world do you guys originate?

We are lucky in Year One to have a hugely diverse group of children and it would be super to learn more about them. The plan is for us to have a huge world map up in the classroom and keep adding to it information about your children and your families. The kind of information we’d like to see is where you, their parents come from, something about the weather, the food that is eaten in that part of the world, whether you (or any other relatives) live or lived in a rural location or a town. We’d also like to know whether there are beaches, cliffs, forests, farms, houses or other things around the location.

In school we shall be learning about the four countries that make up Great Britain, the seas that surround them and the capital cities of each. We shall also be keeping an eye on the weather and how it progresses through to the Spring. We shall also be investigating the immediate area around school and be talking about what it is like and why it is like it is. I am hoping that we will be able to make an off-site visit to a contrasting place for comparison.

We shall be taking up this work in the Spring Term after Christmas and I’m letting you know so that you can help the children get things together (including named photos, please) so that we can use them in our writing and to feed into history too.

Many thanks,

Mrs Hyde.
