School value

These whole-school values are discussed and practised in class and through our school assemblies throughout the half term. In Spring 1 our focus is communication, in Spring 2 we will be focusing on community.

 

Literacy

Reading

The library at Touchbase Pears is a great place to borrow books and is free to join and use. 

Epic Reading online library is another great resource, which we use in class – click here and enter our Year 6 class code xgb3433.

Grammar

Discovery Education is a resource that your child has a log-in for as part of our school subscription.  This site has videos and activities to support their revision.  KS1 Grammar – click here.  KS2 Grammar – click here.

 

Spellings

In Year 6 we learn the spelling patterns from the National Curriculum, along with these words from the statutory word list for year 5 and 6 – click here.  We also revise these spelling words from Year 3 and 4 – click here. 

Along with weekly spelling homework, try using games like Spooky Spellings to help your child practise.

 

Maths

To support your child with their weekly arithmetic practise, MyMiniMaths have created a series of free tutorial videos which provide videos and practise examples for each question type click here. 

Your child also has a school subscriptions for two excellent, National Curriculum-aligned maths sites/apps.

Computing

We use the Teach Computing curriculum. In Spring 1 our topic is Programming A – Variables in games.  In Spring 2 our topic is Data and Information – Spreadsheets.  We will be using Google Sheets to make our spreadsheets – for more information about that app click here

You can use the Think U Know website to support your child with their learning about e-safety and becoming responsible digital citizens.

 

Trips and events for the term

Birmingham Royal Ballet – in-school workshops (06.03.24)

Stan’s Cafe – a series of 5 interactive drama workshops to promote children’s speaking and listening skills (Spring 2)

 

Topic Focus 

During Spring 1 and 2 we will be focusing on the topic, “Moving People” which is all about migration and the plight of refugees.

 

Art and Design

We use sketchbooks to record and develop our ideas, whilst exploring different media (such as press-print, digital printing and mixed media surfaces) and the work of other artists.  In the Spring term,  we will be using our topic “Moving people” to inspire our work in the focus areas of pattern and texture  Click on the links to find out more about theses areas. 

 

Design and Technology

We will be exploring Structures where we will be using our skills of joining and stabilising to create shelters for refugees. 

 

Geography

In our geography work, we will be undertaking a study of the reasons why the global population changes.  We will be focusing on human and physical geography and locational knowledge.

Spanish

This term, we will be continuing to practise our pronunciation and conversational Spanish skills. In Spring  1 we will learn to talk about the weather is. Music

This term, Miss Wyatt will be teaching the children all aspects of the music curriculum for Year 6.

PE

In PE, Year 6 will be looking at invasion games (football and tag-rugby) across the term.  They will also be looking at health-related fitness in Spring 2 where they will compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

 

RSHE

Children in Year 6 will learning how to take care of their health and keep themselves safe whilst online. 

 

RE

Our topics for this term are:

  • Remembering Roots
  • Being Courageous & Confident
  • Being Disregardful of Suffering
  • Being Merciful & Forgiving
