School value

These whole-school values are discussed and practised in class throughout the half term. In Summer 1 our focus is Citizenship, in Summer 2 we will be focusing on creativity.

Summer 1: Citizenship

Within communities, children at Tiverton Academy understand their responsibilities to themselves, others and the environment. Respect is at the core of every relationship in our school and our children internalise the ‘Golden Rule’ of treating others as they would like to be treated (including being a good digital citizen). Because of this, our expectations of children’s behaviour are very high, which allows everybody to enjoy their right to learn and thrive. Running through our curriculum is the importance of children’s well being physically and mentally, and they are given the tools to take care of themselves and to know where to find help if they need it.

Summer 2: Creativity

During their time at Tiverton Academy, children experience a huge range of high quality, inspirational opportunities which introduces them to a world of creative possibilities. Through our rich and ambitious curriculum, we seek and nurture talents in every child and build their confidence to explore, investigate and express their individuality in creative ways.

Topics in Reception

So far in Summer term 1 we have had a creative week based around the Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and have spent time learning about the story of Supertato written by Sue Hendra. The rest of the this term’s learning is based around the children’s interests of Supertato and the growth of plants.

The Prime Areas

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

In our No Outsiders lessons we will  learn to celebrate my family through the story Mommy, Mama and Me by Leslea Newman  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d16pjJBSu4c

Throughout our daily class life will be working towards the Early Learning goals:

Show an understanding of their own feelings and those of others, and begin to regulate our behaviour accordingly;

Give focused attention to what the teacher says, responding appropriately even when engaged in activity, and show an ability to follow instructions involving several ideas or actions.

Work and play cooperatively and take turns with others and form positive attachments to adults and friendships with peers.

Continue to be confident to try new activities and show independence, resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge.

Explain the reasons for rules, know right from wrong and try to behave accordingly.

Communication and Language

Throughout the Summer term we will continue to practise listening attentively and respond to what we hear with relevant questions,
comments and actions when being read to and during small group and whole class discussions.

Through our talking we will practise giving explanations for why things might happen and expressing our ideas and feelings about our experiences using full sentences, including use of past, present, and future tenses.

Physical Development

During our weekly PE lessons we will begin to negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for ourselves and others.
• Demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing;
• Move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing.

When we are playing we will develop our small/fine motor skills so that we can hold a pencil effectively in preparation for fluent writing – using the tripod grip in almost all cases;
• Use a range of small tools, including scissors, paint brushes and cutlery;
• Begin to show accuracy and care when drawing.

Every Friday is drawing club in Reception, have a look at some of the videos you can follow at home to practise your drawing skills

The Specific Areas

Literacy

We use the Little Wandle phonics programme in Reception to learn to read phase 2 and 3 letter sounds and blend these in increasingly longer words. Through our daily story time and during our group reading time we will learn to talk about the books that we share together in class and at home.

You can use the https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/ for information and how to support your child at home with their reading. In addition to this your child will be sent home weekly words to practise based on the sounds we have been learning during the week. It will be uploaded to Tapestry and you will also receive a paper copy each week.

The library at Touchbase Pears is a great place to borrow books and is free to join and use. This online library is another great place to read.

For extra phonics games please check out https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z7tr96f

We enjoy using these games in class phonics play  phonics bloom

As our knowledge of phonics is increasing we will be writing simple phrases and sentences that can be read by others both in our daily phonics Little Wandle lessons and as part of our wider curriculum lessons.

Mathematics

In our Maths lessons we will be continuing to develop a deep understanding of the numbers up to 10.

We will be working towards the Early learning goals  –

  • Verbally count beyond 20, recognising the pattern of the counting system;
  • Compare quantities up to 10 in different contexts, recognising when one quantity is greater than, less than or the same as the other quantity.

Understanding the World

Throughout the Summer term topic work we will begin to recognise that people have different beliefs and celebrate special times in different ways and recognise some similarities and differences between life in this country and life in other countries.
During our weekly Forest School lessons we will continue to learn about some similarities and differences between the natural world around us and contrasting environments, drawing on our experiences and what has been read in class.
We will learn about some important processes and changes in the natural world around us, including the seasons and changing states of matter.

Expressive Arts and Design

As we learn about the story of Superatato we will make use of props and materials when role playing characters in narratives and
stories in our pretend play. During our Music lessons with Mrs Vaughn we will be performing songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and – when appropriate try to move in time with music.

Computing

During our time in Reception we will be exposed to various ICT experiences – cause and effect toys, programmable beebots and remote control toys. We will also use our large interactive whiteboard in the class to complete a simple program.

You can use the think you know website for great online safety resources here.
