School Value:
Autumn1: Cooperation
Central to our teaching and learning are the key principles of Kagan Cooperative Learning: positive interdependence and simultaneous engagement. Everybody learns together. Through a range of cooperative learning structures, which build as children progress through the school, they learn key social skills to enable them to collaborate, build effective relationships and recognise the value of working positively with others.
Autumn 2: Communication
We teach children to work with others and the importance of clear, effective communication to this. During their time at Tiverton Academy, children have a wealth of opportunities to develop as confident, articulate communicators (whether speaking, writing or online) who have an understanding of their responsibilities to and impact on others.
Maths:
For Autumn1 Year1 will be working on Place value within 10 and addition and subtraction within 10.
We will sort and count objects, count objects from a larger group, represent numbers as words and count from any given number. We will be using one more, one less. We will compare groups by matching, compare groups by numbers and order objects by numbers.
For Autumn 2 we will continue with addition and subtraction within 10 followed by Geometry and shape. we will be focusing on part whole models, number bonds to 10, fact families. We will move on recognising 2D and 3D shapes, sorting 2D and 3D shapes and Finally patterns with 2D and 3D shapes.

Literacy:
Autumn 1:We are reading The Sweetest Song, Rhyming Poetry from The Big Green Crocodile, Ruby’s Worry. We will recall key events that have taken place. With our writing our main focus will be ensuring that we use capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and the correct formation of letters. We will continue to focus on our sentence structure. We will be writing a sequence of sentences to describe and to retell a story. For our Poetry we will be able to say and write about what our favourite part was.
Autumn2: We will be reading The Tiger who came to Tea, Our Very Own Dog. To help us with our writing we will write a sequence of sentences, recalling events and expressing our favourite parts of the stories. Followed by sharing factual events.

The library at Touchbase Pears is a great place to borrow books and is free to join and use. This online library is another great place to read.
Phonics:
We use the Little Wandle Early Reading Programme to teach phonics and spellings. As part of the programme spellings will be sent home weekly. If you have any questions or you would like to know how you can support your child please click here .
Part of the programme encourages reading regularly. You too can read the book that your child has been reading in class 3 times a week on Collins ebooks. Your child will also bring a free choice book to share with you at home. Please read with them and log your reading in your Reading records.
Science:
Autumn1: Year 1 will be learning about : Seasonal Changes
We will be observe changes and describe the weather in the UK. We will be focusing on the four countries and cities within the UK. Also we will focus on hot and cold countries across the globe.
Autumn 2: We will be focusing on Everyday Materials
We will identify everyday objects and what materials they are made from. We will be grouping objects by their simple physical properties.
Art:
Autumn 1 and 2:
This term Year 1 will be using a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
We will use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share our ideas, experiences and imagination.
We will develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. Also we will talk about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Autumn1 and 2:
Year 1 we will be focusing on learning from experience, learning about religious traditions and non-religious world-views and learning from Faith and Non-Religious Worldviews. For example:
How do you know you belong?
What do other religions do to celebrate a new baby being born?
When and why do we say Thank you?
What does the Christian Harvest celebration mean?
Why are there Harvest festivals?
Why should we listen to others?
What makes me happy and how do I show it?
RHSE
This term we are focusing on Family and Relationships: What families are and how we show love. What the importance of friendships are. We will also focus on stereotypes and what they are. We will also focus on the actions of others and how these can affect us.
History
Autumn 1 & 2:
This term in History Year 1 will be focusing on Significant People. The lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements.
Geography:
For Autumn 1 and 2 we will be focusing on What is it like here?
We will use simple compass directions (north, south, east and west) and locational and directional language [for example, near and far, left and right], to describe the location of features and routes on a map.
We will use aerial photographs and plan perspectives to recognise landmarks and basic human and physical features; devise a simple map; and use and construct basic symbols in a key.
We will use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its grounds and the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment.

Computing:
Autumn 1 Year 1 will use technology purposefully to create music using digital media. We will answer how music makes us feel? We will identify patterns and experiment with sounds using a computer.
Autumn 2 We will focus on ScratchJR. Our main focus will be algorithms and, creating a programme using a design given. To change a design And finally to create a programme using my own design.
We will use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when we have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies.

P.E.
For Autumn 1 & 2 Year 1 will develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. We will learn to cooperate in challenging situations. We achieve this through skipping, jumping, walking, hopping etc.
We will master balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities within invasion themed games.
Music: This term we will continue to work on our Music with Mrs Vaughn. We look forward to seeing you all at our Harvest Concert.
