Year 3 Class Information
School value
Our school value that will be discussed and practised in class and through our school assemblies throughout the half term is cooperation.
Literacy
In class we will be reading: The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Mac Barnett & Jon Klassen.

Reading
The children will be doing their reading workshop rotations in class on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays every week.
Grammar
Grammar is embedded into our literacy lessons every week. The children will be learning to use noun phrases and retell a known story in a sequence of sentences to give a coherent recount.

Phonics
Not all children will be doing phonics work. For those receiving this support we shall use the Little Wandle Early Reading Programme to teach phonics and spellings in school. If you have any questions or you would like to know how you can support your child please click here . If your child needs to read Little Wandle books at home then they will receive their own account on Collins eBooks.
Maths
This half term we will be focusing on place value.
Your child also has a school subscriptions for two excellent National Curriculum-aligned maths sites/apps.

Science
Our unit topic this half term is Living things: Animals: Movement and Nutrition and in Autumn 2 is Forces and Space.
During Autumn 1 the children will be identifying animals and how they get their nutrition from what they eat.
In Autumn 2 they will learn about contact and non-contact forces, understand friction and magnetism.

Computing
In Autumn 1 our topic is Computing systems and networks: Connecting Computers. Learners will be focusing on digital and non-digital devices, and introducing the concept of computers connected together as a network.
In Autumn 2 during computing week at school we will focus on Creating media – stop frame animation Learners will using digital devices to create media, exploring how they can create stop-frame animations
You can use the Think U Know website to support your child with their learning about e-safety and becoming responsible digital citizens.
Art and Design
Our unit topic this term is Art & Mixed Media: Prehistoric Painting. The children will begin to recognise the processes involved in producing prehistoric art and be able to describe how long ago this kind of art was created.The children will produce initial sketches and use charcoal in the style of cave artists. The children will have the opportunity to use natural pigments to create and mix colours.
Design and Technology
Our unit this half term will be Cooking And Nutrition: Eating Seasonally where children will learn about the principles of a healthy and varied diet and learn to understand seasonality.

Geography
Our unit topic is ‘Why Are The Rainforests Important To Us?‘ We will be learning about The Amazon Rainforest and learning to describe the four layers of a tropical rainforest. Children will be expected to learn about how the Amazon is changing and the impact of humans upon it.

History
In our history work we will be learning Stone Age to Iron Age focussing on the achievements of the earliest civilisations in Britain and an overview of where and when the earliest civilisations appeared.

Music
This term we will continue to work on our music with Mrs Vaughan. The children will be learning to sing as soloists and as part of an ensemble. They will also learn how to appreciate and understand a variety of music.

PE
In PE, Year 2 will be looking at prehistoric dance where children will learn how to express a series of creative moves through dance and invasion games. During this unit children will take part in games that require basic movement patterns
RSHE
During our RSHE lessons we will be learning and exploring Family and Relationships where the children learn more about families and the people who care for them, caring and respectful friendships and relationships.
RE
Our topics for this term are:
- Sharing and Being Generous
- Caring for Others, Animals and Environment

Languages – Spanish
The children will be taught how to recall the seasons and what they like about the seasons using the Spanish language and inparticular the use of ‘y’ and ‘poque’ as conjunctions.
