School Value:

Autumn1: Cooperation

Central to our teaching and learning are the key principles of Kagan Cooperative Learning: positive interdependence and simultaneous engagement. Everybody learns together. Through a range of cooperative learning structures, which build as children progress through the school, they learn key social skills to enable them to collaborate, build effective relationships and recognise the value of working positively with others.

Autumn 2: Communication

We teach children to work with others and the importance of clear, effective communication to this. During their time at Tiverton Academy, children have a wealth of opportunities to develop as confident, articulate communicators (whether speaking, writing or online) who have an understanding of their responsibilities to and impact on others.

Through these explorations, children begin to build a foundational awareness of their own place in the world and the diverse environments and lives of others.

You can use google earth to support this.

We continue building from exploring and understanding our immediate surroundings, answering questions like “What is it like here?” The geography curriculum then introduces them to broader physical features, such as “What is the weather like in the UK?” Through these explorations, children begin to build a foundational awareness of their own place in the world and the diverse environments and lives of others.

We will master balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities within invasion themed games.

Music:

Music education in Year 1 aims to ignite a love of music by engaging children in expressive singing, playing simple instruments, and listening actively to a range of sounds. Building on early years’ exploration of sound, children begin to understand basic musical elements like pulse and dynamics through practical activities. This foundational year fosters confidence, creativity, and a sense of achievement through shared musical experiences.

We have chosen to use Sparkyard for our music delivery as it supports the non-specialist to deliver high quality music education, mapped to the national curriculum.

In Year 1, music lessons are delivered by Claire Vaughan.
