School value
Our school values that will be discussed and practised in class and through our school assemblies throughout the Spring 1 half term is community and our school value for Spring 2 is citizenship.
English:
During the Spring 1 Term we will be reading the following books: No Dinner by Jessica Souhami and Too much stuff by Emily Gravett. We will be focusing on sentences and sequences of sentences, ensuring they are demarcated correctly and make sense. We will retell an event from the story writing in 3rd person and recite and perform.
During Spring 2 we will look at contemporary picture books, Leaf by Sandra Dieckmann and Bloom by Anne Booth and Robyn Wilson-Owen where again we will use a sequence of sentences to retell and also personal writing (information writing).
The library at Touchbase Pears is a great place to borrow books and is free to join and use. This online library is another great place to read.
Phonics:
We use the Little Wandle Early Reading Programme to teach phonics and spellings. If you have any questions or you would like to know how you can support your child please click here .
Part of the programme encourages reading regularly. You too can read the book that your child has been reading in class 3 times a week on Collins ebooks.
Grammar
Discovery Education is a resource that your child has a log-in for as part of our school subscription. This site has videos and activities to support their learning: KS1 Grammar – click here. Please do ask if you need your child’s log in details sent home again.
Another tool that can be helpful is BBC Bitesize – Grammar.
Spelling
Year 2 common exception words.
Maths:
The units in maths that we will be focusing on during the Spring Term are Shape, Money, Multiplication and Division and measures. Over the next week or so we will be completing our Shape unit and then moving onto the above. Counting (forwards and backwards) at home with your child is key, getting them to handle ‘real money’ and playing shops – giving correct quantities, providing change etc will all support your learning.
Your child also has a school subscription for two excellent National Curriculum-aligned maths sites/apps.
Mathletics log ins remain the same – please ask if you require them again and TTRS (Times Table Rock Star).

Scratch Garden to practice counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s is a useful tool also to keep skills fresh in heads.
Science:
This half term we will be focusing on the unit: Everyday Materials whereby children will learn and recognise the suitability of materials for specific purposes. They will explore how actions like stretching and bending affect solid objects, compare material suitability through tests and record data. During Spring 2 we will focus on Animals: life cycles and health where we will identify the stages of animals life cycles and carry out tests to record growth. In all lessons we will look at how to work scientifically in order to achieve the best results.
Computing:
During the Spring Term we will introduce the term ‘data’. Children will begin to understand what data means and how this can be collected in the form of a tally chart. They will learn the term ‘attribute’ and use this to help them organise data. They will then progress onto presenting data in the form of pictograms and finally block diagrams. We will use the data presented to answer questions.
**We use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when we have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies**
You can use the Think U Know website to support your child with their learning about e-safety and becoming responsible digital citizens.
Art:
In Art our unit is painting and mixed media: a life in colour where we will on teaching primary and secondary colours, colour mixing, and creating textures using different tools. We will also cover collage techniques, encouraging to experiment with materials and evaluate artistic choices and aims to develop understanding of colour, texture, and composition in art. How exciting!

We will identify and locate characteristics of the UK on a map, identify human and physical features and locate human and physical features on a world map too. We will learnt to explain the difference between oceans and seas and be able to name and locate the five oceans on a world map. We will explore our local area and learn how to use an aerial photograph to draw a simple sketch map.
Google Earth is a great tool to explore with your child at home: google earth
