Literacy

The class are also reading a range of non fiction books about the Roman empire. We secure the correct letter formation and basic joins. We work on writing clear and accurate sentences to build short paragraphs  e.g. a story ending or a character description and work on punctuation such as using question marks, writing in the third person and using coordinating conjunctions.

The library at Touchbase Pears is a great place to borrow books and is free to join and use. This online library is another great place to read.

Spellings

We learn the spelling patterns from the national curriculum for Year 2 and 3, along with words from the statutory spelling list. Children also participate in dictation and handwriting every English lesson.

Your child needs to be able to spell all of these words by the end of Year 3, and these words by the end of Year 3. Try using games like Karate Kats and Spooky Spellings to make spelling fun.

Maths

We will work on multiplication and division A. Your child has a school subscription for two excellent National Curriculum-aligned maths sites/apps. The log-in details for these can be found in the front of their reading record. The children also use these resources in school every single week.

Art and Design

In the autumn term, we will focus on becoming growing artists. We will work with a range of media, such as record colours, patterns and shapes through observational drawing, recognise and discuss the importance of shading and experimenting with drawing techniques.

Design and Technology

We will learn about mechanisms, paying particular attention to pneumatic toys. Children will apply the skills learned during the lessons and design and create their own toy that opens when a mechanism is used.

History

As part of our history topic we will be looking at ancient Roman life, Children will explore the Roman invasion and settlement of Britain. They will be building on prior learning about British prehistory. Children will investigate life in Ancient Rome, the reasons for the invasion, the responses of the Celts, the success of the Roman army and the lasting legacy of the Roman Empire in Britain. The unit emphasises source analysis, deduction from artefacts and understanding historical impact.

Geography

We will be looking at locational, place & human and physical geography – Where does our food come from? This unit expands on pupils’ understanding of global geography by focusing on the origins and distribution of food. It connects previous learning about biomes and human/physical features to economic activity and trade links, encouraging critical thinking about environmental impact and responsible consumption.

Spanish

We have been learning Spanish in Year 3. This term we will be increasing our vocab and learning new words which cover different fruits and be able to describe which particular fruit they like.

Music

We sing a range of songs linked to our topics and the seasons, working of pitch and expression. We play tuned percussion instruments and learn to play question and answer phrases. We learn more about improvising and composing, using instruments and voices and we learn about a range of different composers from history. The children deepen their engagement with varied musical genres and traditions, starting to understand how music is. The school has chosen to use Sparkyard for our music delivery as it supports the non-specialist to deliver high quality music education, mapped to the national curriculum.
