Frida Kahlo Year 6 Self-Portraits

After practicing free-hand, we took photos of ourselves and applied a squared grid to them.   On a separate piece of paper, we then replicated the grid ( same number of squares) and then copied each line from the photo grid to the paper.    We then added our fantastical, surreal, dream-like background images just like Frida did.

The next step was to learn to paint carefully using acrylics.  We started with the background, mixing colours accurately and experimenting with application techniques.  Next came the really tricky bit – skin tone mixing – It was hard but we managed to achieve life-like colours with the paints we had.  Finally, we added in the fine features using colour pencils.
