School value

Our school value that will be discussed and practised in class and through our school activities throughout the half term is cooperation.

Topics in Reception

During our first few weeks in Reception our Topic – All about me (getting to know you) is based around ourselves and our families . Then we move onto the topic Sparkle and Shine (celebrations) which is based around the children’s interests and celebrations throughout the Autumn Term.

The Prime Areas

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

As we begin the start of our school journey at Tiverton Academy we will be practising settling into the class and making new friends. We will create our class charter together and learn school rules. We will learn and practise how to play together and take turns.

In our No Outsiders lessons we will learn to say what we think by using the story You Choose by Pippa Goodhart. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUca8bkXwjI

We will also learn to understand that it is ok to like different things through the story Red Rockets and Rainbow Jelly by Sue Heap. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIBTDc-pl8M

Communication and Language

Throughout the Autumn term we will listen to stories and learn to listen to each other. We will be practising offering our own ideas, explaining why things might happen, and expressing our ideas and feelings using full sentences.

Physical Development

During our weekly PE lessons with Mr Campbell we will begin to explore different ways of moving, changing speed and direction, developing body awareness, balance, spatial and directional awareness. Mr Campbell will teach us how to play co-operation games and how to take turns.

When we are writing and making marks we will begin to develop a pencil grip and begin to form some recognisable letters.

The Specific Areas

Literacy

We use the Little Wandle phonics programme in Reception to learn to read phase 2 letter sounds and begin to blend these in short words. Through our daily story time and during our group reading time we will learn to talk about the books that we share together in class and at home.

You can use the https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/ for information and how to support your child at home with their reading. In addition to this your child will be sent home weekly sounds to practise based on the sounds we have been learning during the week.

The library at Touchbase Pears is a great place to borrow books and is free to join and use. This online library is another great place to read.

For extra phonics games please check out https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z7tr96f

Mathematics

In our Maths lessons we will be matching, sorting and comparing groups. Talking about measure and patterns and starting to develop a deep understanding of the numbers to 5. We will also begin to identify some 2D shapes.

For lots of online Maths games, check out https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Search.aspx Subject=16&AgeGroup=1

Numberblocks are also a great way to teach your children Maths skills, have a look at https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/shows/numberblocks

Understanding the World

Throughout the Autumn term we will be learning about other cultures and talking about celebrations/special times that happen in our families. During our weekly Forest School lessons with Mr Bromfield we will be learning about seasonal changes and the environment around us.

Expressive Arts and Design

We will be creating our self portraits and developing our skills in our class Art studio by using different types of materials such as paint and glue.
