Show Me The Money!!

SO, money can be very hard to teach and it can be even harder to learn. At the start of the week we were discussing money, just seeing what the children already knew. I tried to find out if the children had any idea about equivalence, usual thing;

Mrs Hyde: My packet of sweets costs 10p, but I don’t actually have a ten pence piece in my purse, so what can I use instead? (as in other coins)

Child 1: Your credit card.

Child 2: You can ask your Mum for one.

Hmmm . . .

A few days later we are doing loads of fun stuff and we know what the coins look like, we know that the really important things on them are the numbers and words (eg ‘one pound’), that their shape and colour can be useful when we are ferreting around in a pocket or a purse but most of all we can identify them, we can use them, we can add them up AND we can find equivalents. Put yourselves to the test, how many ways can you find to make ten pence???

Take a deep breath, we’re going to be finding the change next!

Here are some pictures of an activity the children have done this week. Lots of support, problem solving and bonding going on amongst the children. It was really nice to see. Well done to Year 1!

Check out the photos . . .
