Analysing Art – Empathy and Emotion
Today, Year 6 were learning about the work of John Singer-Sargent, and in particular about one of his paintings created on the battlefields of World War One: “Gassed”.
The children closed their eyes and imagined the painting based only on it’s description. Then, once the painting was revealed, they discussed what they found surprising and what they had not imagined.
For the next task, the class analysed the composition and worked in teams to recreate it. It took two revisions, and lots of great communication, but they got there in the end. Taking their place in the composition, really made Y6 consider the lives of the men in the painting.
