This is an important Buddhist custom to honour the death of Buddha and his attainment of final Nirvana.

This means that Buddha, in his death, was released from the cycle of rebirth.

15 February Parinirvana Day – Cultural Calendar — Quote from The Met, Fifth Ave, New York “According to the Buddhist chronicles, when the Buddha died near the city of Kushinagara, in northern India, he broke free from the cycle of rebirths and attained nirvana, absolute release from karmic rebirth.”
